Did lightning strike again?

Here at the Little English Guesthouse, we’re getting a bit brassed off with daily thunderstorms accompanied by lightning strike – again.  Heaving gullywashers accompanied by loud thunder and lightning. Or as Brits would say “absolutely bucketing down”.

In the last few years, we’ve had to replace a computer, a printer, a router, 2 modems and the ethernet cable to the computer.

Surge protectors, you say! Well, that might slow down the 300 million volts of power coursing all around us, but it doesn’t really have the oomph to stop it completely.

Not in Florida.

Is it getting worse? Without a doubt it is. We’ve been in business for 20 years, and I’ve lived here for almost double that, and it is most definitely getting worse.

I’m not interested in a debate on climate change, warming oceans, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, cyclical weather patterns or which President is the most useless. I’m just saying the thunderstorms over our building are getting worse.

And it’s getting expensive.

And it’s a major inconvenience to disconnect everything you don’t want to get fried, every single time you hear a crack of lightning or thunderbolt.

I find myself planning my work day around the weather forecast.

I try to accomplish as much computer work as possible, first thing in the morning hours. Because I may be forced to disconnect as soon as it heats up outside.

Also, run whatever errands need to be run before it hits triple digits by early afternoon. Because if the humidity doesn’t make you melt, the torrential rain will drench you from head to toe.

Florida, the lightning capital of the country.

Home to Mickey Mouse and beautiful beaches, the Sunshine state also has the highest property insurance rates, the lowest income tax rate and oh yes, daily LIGHTNING storms in the summer.

OK, rant over – I’m off to Best Buy to buy another modem.

Because even though it’s raining cats and dogs out there, I have to unplug the desktop/modem lest it get fried by lightning strike – yet again.
