Fancy a little sunset watching tonight?

On a quiet evening, we love to run down to St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge to watch the sunset by the lighthouse. We often recommend it to our guests who fancy a little drive through the forest (on a paved highway!) and they always come back glad they made the little trek.

Just before sunset is usually when we see the most wildlife. We almost always see an alligator, or two – because after all, it is Florida, and there is water. We’ve also seen a bobcat, bald eagles, snakes, lots of deer, raccoon and armadillo. The bobcat was, without a doubt, the best sight. He just stopped in front of us to take a look at us, long enough for us to stick the camera out the window to take a photo and catch his spooky “flashbulb” eyes.

Much as I love sunsets from the top deck of a cruise ship, knowing I’m dicing with death (safe inside my car!) with wild animals all around me, to get to this sunset, does make it particularly exciting.

Getaway and come spend the night with us! You can enjoy a beautiful sunset at St. Marks and go home feeling like you’ve been somewhere far away.
