United Kingdom, Great Britain, Europe uh?

July 11, 2016

It's been a curious discovery lately...so many of my American friends, guests, acquaintances, fellow sojourners, complete strangers that I meet in Publix.. don't understand the big hoo-ha about Brexit (that's Britain's exit from Europe for those of you that don't pay attention to the world news).  That's understandable, the details are somewhat convoluted depending on which political party you believe.

What has been curious is those that don't know the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain. Which is ok, no high horse judgment coming from here. After all, I didn't realize until I'd lived here a few years that Arkansas is not pronounced in any form or fashion the same way as Kansas.  And my American family, friends, complete strangers in Publix...acted appalled and shocked that I didn't know the difference.  So to be helpful, I found this nifty little diagram from Max Galka in New York, he's got some lovely visuals that I might be posting in the future, so go look him up, he's a clever chap.

So here's your 101 - the United Kingdom (so called when Scotland united with England, but that's going back about 400 years and way T.M.I for this post), I digress.. the United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (but not Southern Ireland). Great Britain consists of just England, Scotland and Wales (all on one body of land). It's the United Kingdom that recently voted to leave Europe, which is also a body of land, (Europe that is), separated from Great Britain by the English Channel. Got it? Clear as mud? Stay tuned...
