Room with a view....almost

If you've stayed in our Staffordshire room, you'll likely know that we chose that name because I graduated from the university there and it holds a special place in my heart.  Staffordshire was  the county where fine bone china was born. Spode, Wedgewood, Royal Doulton and so on.

I say "was" because in the last few years, I'm told it's all been shipped out of the country to far flung, cheaper, places for manufacturing.  However, when I was a student, the Potteries churned out fine bone china teapots, cups and saucers, plates and other fineries. Because we lived almost around the corner from where they were made, even a poor student could afford to purchase a nice cup and saucer for tea.

What you may not know is that the hand-painted window above the flat screen TV is actually the view from the dormitory on campus where I lived the first year. Having been born and raised in London, it was a lovely sight to behold.

My roomates and I, we couldn't quite see this view from the window, as there was another building directly in front of us, but throw on a coat, step outside and walk a few steps and voila! The Staffordshire countryside, pristine, bucolic, wonderfully calming during those stressful exam weeks.

When we were renovating the house to meet code, to get our bed and breakfast license, we took out all the old windows and replaced them with the beautiful diamond-etched double-glazed windows we have now. But those old windows had character so we kept a couple.  I found a local artist who painted this scene from an old photo I had, and here it is in, hanging in the Staffordshire room, helping our guests to happen they're also in that beautifully pristine Staffordshire countryside, cup of tea in hand.

Just like my old university days, it's a room with a view....almost.

Come and see!
