Happy Dad's day!

You did remember, right?  Tomorrow is Father's day and it's not too late to run down to the shop and get a pretty card, or maybe pen a short letter to tell your Pappa how much you appreciate all he's done for you. Many years ago, I wrote a letter to my father. I apologized for my major acts of disobedience (the minor ones were too numerous to list). I acknowledged that he was, in fact, correct about pretty much everything.

We all remember those days in our youth, young adulthood, and even middle age, when Pa said something we totally ignored, dismissed or even argued with him about.  And later, it turned out, he was right.

In my letter, I thanked him for being a great father. For being a faithful provider, loving husband to my mother and role model for the many males in our extended family and circle, who needed one. I told him that I had noticed the good choices he had made, plus the unwise choices he had not made. I acknowledge it took discipline, great love, sacrifice and wisdom.

When he died, years later, I found that letter in his bible.  He never said a word about it, other than to acknowledge he received it. A quiet, stoic man, who took his lifetime job of Dad seriously, often reminded us kids "I am not your friend, I am your Fada".  And he was right about that too. We didn't need another friend, we had lots of those. Some of them faithful, some of them fairweather.  We needed a father, a daddy, baba, padre, pops, ol' man. And that's what God gave us. I'm thankful.

You may never know what it means to your Pop to hear you say that you love him and appreciate all that he sacrificed for you. Write it down and give it to him tomorrow It may become his treasured possession, even if he never tells you. Because that's often how Dads are.  Just do it anyway. And if you're a dad, reading this....Happy Father's day!
