Are you old enough to remember Felix the Cat? He was an old cartoon, even when I was a child, but he was cute and got up to funny antics, as cartoon characters do.
I spoke with “Pat” recently. Pat’s spouse comes home in a foul mood, after a bad day at work and takes out their anger, frustration, hurt, exhaustion on Pat. It sounds ugly, profane even. And Pat – Pat’s done absolutely nothing to deserve such abusive behavior. Other than being the proverbial cat that someone feels they have the right to kick, because Felix is “safe” and will still love them after the verbal tirade has abated.
Is your name Felix? Are you the cat that someone feels they have the right to kick? I’ve got news for you. That’s not love, that’s abuse.
Walking on eggshells for fear of “making” someone angry is not relationship. It’s manipulation and control.
Repeat after me – “My name is not Felix” Say it often, say it out loud to yourself until you believe it. Know your worth because self-worth and self-respect is not false pride. Don’t allow anyone to tell you otherwise.
When you allow someone to treat you like Felix once, twice, thrice – it will become their pattern because you’re training them with your passivity, that this behavior is acceptable to you. Once that pattern is ingrained, it becomes habit – and almost impossible to break.
Felix the Cat often resides with Dr. Jekyll (and Mr. Hyde). Dr. Jekyll has one personality during the day (at work, perhaps), and a totally different one at night (at home, perhaps).
Repeat after me – “Your name may be Dr. Jekyll, but mine is not Felix”. And then pick up your kitty litter box, your soft cuddly mice toys and the little bells that cats like and get away from Dr. Jekyll. Because life is short – and you are worth more to the One who created you, than to be the cat that gets kicked when a car pulls in the driveway every night.
Your name is not Felix. Believe it.
