These are the Versailles Gardens on Paradise Island off Nassau, not quite the little English gardens but we keep dreaming..
On one of our adventures a few years ago, we found a huge statue of Dr. David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary explorer during Victorian times. And when I say huge, I mean huge. The top of my head barely reached the top of his walking cane.
Someone went to an awful lot of trouble to make this statue and place him here.
Livingston’s body is buried in Westminster Abbey, in London – but why is the statue in this place? Upon further investigation we discovered other legends and luminaries such as Napoleon and Franklin Roosevelt.
Apparently when these folks put together these beautiful gardens in Nassau, they simply wanted some figures that were inspirational. They certainly were good conversation pieces as we happened upon them, tucked into little nooks of the garden. Thom even suggested we put a statue of someone famous in a little nook of our little English garden. Any suggestions? LOL
P.S. This blog was written before Hurricane Dorian went through some of the islands in the Bahamas. Paradise Island is where Jose Andres was based (World Central Kitchen) where he cooked meals for thousands upon thousands of displaced Bahamians in the weeks after Dorian left. Nassau did not sustain the damage that Freeport (on Grand Bahama Island) or the Abaco Islands did during Dorian.
