Key West – before it was Key West..

Thanks to the internet, fabulous photos like this suddenly pop up in the newsfeed and remind me of a little adventure we once had.

For one of Thom’s milestone birthdays (he’s had more than me!) we jumped on a plane and left freezing Tallahassee for a little southern warmth. Crossing the Seven Mile Bridge made us feel like we were literally driving through the ocean.

Thom was in his element in a fancy (rented) car with the roof down, Neil Diamond rasping through the loudspeakers and of course, a pretty girl in the passenger seat. I think he may have been having visions of Tom Cruise and twirling cocktail shakers in each hand (had that movie even come out then?) as we sped down to Key West.

Nowadays, I’m not sure you could speed anywhere in South Florida. It’s pretty much bumper to bumper traffic from Fort Lauderedale onwards. We stayed in a reasonably priced bed and breakfast close to Duval Street and wandered around talking to locals, a la Ernest Hemmingway and eating fresh, really fresh, fish. It was a quick, weekend celebration and then back to work.

Recently, we found ourselves in Key West again, briefly, as a lunch stopover on a cruise to more tropical climes. The cute little bed and breakfasts are no longer, the locals can’t afford to live there anymore and the general congestion of too many people on a tiny little island is probably contributing to the sea level rising as the weight of all those people makes a dent in the earth.

But it’s still worth a trip! You know my position is that any trip is a good trip if it gets you to a place you’ve not seen before, to meet people, and perhaps experience a new culture that’s new, and helps you broaden your mind about people.

So don’t wait! Travel NOW while you can. Cut the cable TV and spend that monthly gouge-fee on making a few memories with people you like being around. It’ll be worth it for a deposit into the memory bank, I promise you.
